Beth, you're right! We're saving envelopes and plastic on CDs by uploading our work on the computer to our licensees.
A tip I heard on Oprah for paper - rather than toss it in the garbage, shred it and add it to your compost pile. I'm wondering about the inks on the paper though - the solicitations we get for instance.
Still...it would go in a landfill anyway...

Thanks for sharing Di I think this is a great idea!!!
I guess if you're worried about the inks then that compost could be used for ornamentals and not vegetables...although a lot of junk mail and newspapers now use soy ink. I think in general we're safer if we just stick to the non-glossy stuff for this?
Not sure about other places but here in Seattle we can put any and all shredded paper (and greasy pizza boxes!) in our yard-waste bins that get picked up with our garbage. Their giant glob of compost gets way hotter than a home-bin could ever get so they can process a lot more icky stuff!
I've also read that earthworms can process toxins, heavy metals, etc. and their castings come out clean...but I'm sure that happens pretty slowly considering their tiny little mouths!
